Why Did Lady Gaga Go To VMAs As Jo Calderone?
Lady Gaga performs at the 2011 VMAs

When Lady Gaga showed up at the 2011 Video Music Awards, she wasn't Lady Gaga anymore; she was Jo Calderone.
Gaga's creative director, Laurieann Gibson, spoke to MTV News days before the show went live, and she explained why Gaga wanted to stay in character all night long.
"The idea of her being a performance artist -- and it's starting the performance on the red carpet and the idea that the performance never ends for her -- is the first time I've experienced this with an artist," she said. "I love it. That's something that is specific to her, and the whole night was the performance, and it was important that Jo was a part of the whole night."
Gaga -- or, rather, Calderone -- opened the show with a lengthy monologue before launching into Gaga's "Yoü and I." Jo then hung out with Kanye West in the audience, paid tribute to Britney Spears and even shared a kiss with the pop star. Not once did Gaga break character. In Gibson's eyes, this type of performance is groundbreaking.
"I hope that the Monsters and the music industry [connect to] the idea that as long as you execute to the highest level of your ability, that you make a statement, that you push your creative ability to the max, and it doesn't mean one thing or another," she said.
"It could mean standing under one spotlight, it could mean tons of camels and belly-dancing girls. I don't know one is not necessarily better than the other," she continued. "But it is about who's the artist; it belongs to the artist, so in that one moment you have to take it and give all you can. And so I hope people take the fearlessness away [and] the creative notion that we constantly push boundaries, that we're not followers."

Taylor Swift, Rihanna Dress To Impress At Billboard Awards
Taylor Swift at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards
Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images
On Sunday night, some of the biggest names in the music industry hit up the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas and decided that sparkles and sequins make for the perfect additions to any red carpet get-up. Well, it is Sin City after all.
Taylor Swift always seems to bring some of that Nashville sparkle to any red carpet. She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. Nicki Minaj showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit.
Selena Gomez turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce & Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Like Gomez, Ke$ha opted for some cut-out detailing in her sparkly, slate-gray dress with tulle skirt. Rihanna looked white hot in her men's tailored Max Azria suit, which she kept sexy and feminine by not buttoning her shirt all the way.
Fergie went S&M chic in her little black bandage-type dress by Hervé Léger. Nicole Kidman also wore black. She paired a casual braid hairstyle with a long black gown and Keith Urban. British pop cutie Kyle Minogue looked funky in her little black lacey dress. Inside the show, Britney Spears sat in the audience wearing a skimpy black dress of her own, her hair in loose curls, with little-to-no accessories.
While some stars kept the color scheme low-key, Keri Hilson decided to stand out in her billowy little yellow dress paired with a turquoise-colored belt. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress.
The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. Joe Jonas wore all black with white sneakers, Ne-Yo paired his periwinkle suit with a Yankees cap and Justin Bieber wore black tuxedo pants with a gold-lamé tuxedo jacket.
Which stars' styles caught your eye at the Billboard Music Awards? Tell us in the comments.

'The Hunger Games' Teaser Trailer
Get More: 2011 VMA, Music
Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, had already treated fans of Suzanne Collins' beloved trilogy of young-adult novels, to first-look photos of the film's three main cast members: 21-year-old Winter's Bone Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, 18-year-old The Kids Are All Right star Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark and 21-year-old Last Song actor Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne. This, however, is the first video footage to be released thus far, and -- while it doesn't offer much in the way of the film's plot -- it certainly conveys a sense of the tone and overall look that director Gary Ross is going for. Of course, it's also cool to see Jennifer Lawrence in action as Katniss.
In the minute-long clips she shows off her athletic prowess, sprinting through a lush green forest, dodging fire-engulfed falling trees -- and, ultimately, leaping over a felled tree, deftly placing an arrow in her bow and firing it off, all in one fluid motion. And she does all this while her pal and hunting partner Gale gives her one heck of a pep talk in voiceover. "You're stronger than they are," he tells Katniss. "They just want a good show, that's all they want. You know how to hunt. Show them how good you are."
As anyone who's read the books knows, that inspirational speech is meant to prepare Katniss for the titular Hunger Games, a televised battle where children from each "district" in a post-apocalyptic world engage in an all-out fight to the death.
That battle will rage when The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23, 2012.

Michael Jackson Doctor's Trial Delayed
Conrad Murray
Photo: AFP/ Getty Images
LOS ANGELES — Though Conrad Murray's lawyers had been pressing for a speedy trial, a judge in the involuntary manslaughter case against Michael Jackson's doctor ruled on Wednesday to delay opening statements in the proceedings until May.
The Associated Press reported that Murray's attorneys consented to the postponement after they discussed the matter with prosecutors and both agreed they could be ready for trial by May 9.
According to a transcript from the closed-door session, though opening statements will not begin for several months, Murray told Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor that he did not want to forfeit his right to a quick trial, but agreed to the delay if screening of prospective jurors begins as scheduled on March 24.
"It is only acceptable to me if this is not strung along over a long period of time," Murray told the justice. "I don't want to lose my constitutional right to speedy trial." Murray — who has pleaded not guilty to the charges — reportedly has been in favor of having the proceedings begin as soon as possible because he is facing financial troubles, but he said he understands that the delay is necessary to allow both sides to prepare for the trial.
Pastor consented because he said he didn't want to lose a jury pool, and believed a month-long delay might let potential jurors shuffle their schedules for the case, which could take up to two months to decide. The judge has reportedly clashed with Murray's defense team in recent weeks, pressing them for answers about why they had not turned over more witness notes and other potential evidence to prosecutors in the run-up to the trial.
Cardiologist Murray was hired to be Jackson's personal physician while the King of Pop prepared for his planned 50-date comeback series of shows at London's O2 arena in the summer of 2009. The doctor told police that he provided the then-50-year-old Jackson with sedatives and the surgical anesthetic propofol in order to combat the singer's chronic insomnia. He said he did so on the morning of June 25, 2009, when Jackson died of what a coroner deemed acute propofol poisoning.
Murray's lawyers reportedly plan to argue that Jackson was already in weak health before he died, that it's unfair to blame propofol for his passing and that, if the anesthetic was to blame, the pop superstar may have given himself the fatal dose by drinking the drug in a panic.
A status hearing in the case has been set for this Wednesday.

Red Hot Chili Peppers 'A New Band' On I'm With You
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Photo: MTV News
Anthony Kiedis makes no bones about the fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are "a new band," despite all evidence to the contrary. After all, not many "new" bands have sold more than 65 million albums worldwide, won a grip of Grammy awards, survived a series of rather-seismic lineup shifts or made some of the most-iconic music videos of all time. And even fewer have actually been a band since 1983.
And yet, here is Kiedis, talking about the Chili Peppers' 10th studio album, I'm With You, in stores Monday (August 29), and how its recording signifies not only a new era — it's the first with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who replaced longtime member John Frusciante in 2009 — but a new band, too.
As Kiedis explained to MTV News, it has "a lot to do with"
Klinghoffer. "He's definitely a big part of why it's different:
different person, different chemistry, different experience, different era ... we're a new band, and thank goodness.
"It seemed to be, whether we liked it or not, time for change to take place. So, an opportunity was created, one that instantly seemed to be a wonderful occasion. It's so exciting when you get thrown a curveball by the universe, and you turn that curveball into a home run. And I feel like that's what happened ... Curveballs used to break my heart and freak me out, but now, I know from experience that they usually lead to something cool."
And on I'm With You, not only do the Peppers begin a new chapter, but they push their signature sound further than they've ever pushed before. Sure, Flea's propulsive bass lines still form the backbone, but the new songs are amplified and expounded upon by his time spent studying music theory at USC.
In a new twist, most of the tunes began as piano compositions and slowly blossomed in the recording studio, with Klinghoffer adding slow-diving guitar flourishes (and the occasional keyboard, too). There are percussive tones added by Brazilian musicians and organ peals from former Beastie Boys associates.
As Kiedis put it, "It's more ethereally complex and layered and kind of spooky and moody and dreamy, yet still profound. ... The spirit of the Red Hot Chili Peppers remains and changes and moves on. It's us, with a whole new thing."
Of course, that "new thing" couldn't have been created without putting the old thing to bed — which means that, for the first time in their careers, the Chili Peppers decided to take a break from the business of being a band: A break that, to hear Kiedis tell it, was a long time coming.
"We had a little coffee break there ... it was a hell of a big cup," he said, laughing. "It was kind of an unspoken, obvious time for [it]. By the end of the Stadium Arcadium tour, which was a year and a half, everybody was like a pile of broken dolls, and no one could really conceive of not taking a break.
"So when somebody uttered 'Two-year break,' everyone just hip-hip hoorayed, and without really knowing what that would mean, it was a good idea," he continued. "It was just an innate, gut-instinct good idea. And everybody went and did things that made a lot of sense."
And though the self-imposed hiatus lasted two years (and included Frusciante's departure,) there was never a moment where Kiedis ever thought about doing anything but the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And even if fans began to worry about the band's future — Arcadium was released in 2006, making this the longest period between albums in RHCP history — he never did — partially because he never lost the passion, but mostly because he knew rebirths take a long time.
"I have never felt anywhere close to being done. I was pretty sure after the last record that the best was yet to come, but I always kind of feel like that, like if you want it, it's there," he said. "I like really old people that still make out intensely with their wives or girlfriends ... why would you ever stop?"

Kelly Rowland Talks Beyonce's Pregnancy
Hitting the all-new black carpet, the "Motivation" songstress strutted her stuff in a super-sexy low-cut black and gold number - as the dress was a showstopper while offering both sheer and feathered accents set off by platform peep-toe pumps.
Celebrating the latest rendition of the annual affair, Kelly continued her night at SLS Hotel while joining a slew of other celebs in a strapless blue-frock.
Meanwhile, Miss Rowland has opened up about her good gal pal Beyonce's just announced pregnancy - offering nothing but kind words for her former fellow Destiny's Child group member.
"She takes so many traits from her mother, and I just think it's going to be so natural for her. It's natural for her now!," she told Us weekly, adding, "I think she'll be an incredible mother, because she's always been motherly."

'Hunger Games' VMA Teaser 'Epic,' Experts Say
Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate
Ever since production began on "The Hunger Games," fans around the world have been waiting patiently for a first look at footage of heroine Katniss Everdeen in action. MTV News was very happy to provide that first-ever teaser, which star Jennifer Lawrence introduced to the world during the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night.
Given the excitement surrounding our exclusive look at footage of the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' beloved dystopian bestseller, MTV News sought out three "Hunger Games" experts to get their reactions to seeing Katniss' survival skills first-hand.
"That was epic," gushed Samus Belle of fan site Sparks Will Fly. "I'm so excited. Especially seeing Jennifer Lawrence running through the whole arena, she looked like a hunter," Belle said. "She just captured Katniss onscreen."
Kimmy West, of Mockingjay.net agreed with Belle on Lawrence's spot-on portrayal: "Jennifer Lawrence is just embodying Katniss," West said. "The big trait about Katniss is that she's animalistic when she hunts. You can totally tell that she's been training so much for that shot," West explained of seeing Lawrence wield a bow and fire an arrow in the clip. "She really looks like a pro."
Our experts were so delighted to see Lawrence assume pole position in the teaser, they didn't mind not getting to see male leads Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) in action. Hemsworth's voice can be heard throughout the footage, however, offering Katniss words of encouragement that echo in her mind as she's running for her life.
"I think they maybe want to wait a little bit longer on [showing] Peeta to build up the excitement even more," said Arianna Ruiz of Down With the Capitol. "And Gale is still a very important part of Katniss' life."
"Basically, [Gale] is saying, 'You know how to hunt,' 'All they want is a good show,' 'Show them how good you are,' " West said, summarizing the voiceover. "I feel like it's a really good message to send across for the trailer because it's showing she's not a career tribute," she explained of the story's highly trained expert contestants. "She's not someone who wants to kill anyone; she's just wants to live after this."
Belle speculated about when fan favorite Peeta might appear in the film's marketing campaign: "I'm a Peeta fan, but I think they will put him somewhere during the trailers because half the 'Hunger Games' fandom probably wants him in there at some point.
"In all fairness, throughout the first part of the games, she is thinking mostly about Gale and the advice he gave her."
West added that although she is just as excited as anyone to see Peeta, she's happy for certain elements to remain a surprise for as long as possible.
"I like to be in anticipation still; I don't want to see everything,"
she explained. "I'm excited to see Effie and Haymitch and Primm and Peeta," West said of her favorite characters. "But I think it's good I'm still waiting for it."
Speaking of waiting for things, West thinks director Gary Ross and Lionsgate added a special bonus for fans to pick up on at the very end of the footage.
"Right as you see the 'Add us on Facebook' stuff, and the screen turns black, and you can hear four really high-pitched whistles, kind of like if you're not listening hard, you might miss it," she explained of a character's memorable communicative methods with Katniss in the book. "That's really awesome. I was wondering what tune they were going to use, and it sounds really perfect for what I was thinking."

Beyonce Reveals Pregnancy On VMA Stage

After performing at the 2011 VMAs, Beyoncé Knowles unbuttoned her sparkly jacket and rubbed her belly -- announcing her pregnancy to the world. The camera then cut to Jay-Z and Kanye West in the audience and their over-the-top jubilant reaction.
Married to Jay for three years, the star has said time and time again that she planned on having a baby by the time she was 30; well, B turns 30 early next month.
The power couple tied the knot back in 2008 in a private ceremony at Jay-Z's New York apartment, and since then, there have been years of pregnancy rumors that they've shot down.
In June, the singer told CNN interviewer Piers Morgan that she wanted to get pregnant.
Click for photos of Beyoncé's big VMA night.
"I feel like a woman. I feel like I'm very aware of who I am. I feel great and I feel like 30 is the ideal age [to start a family], because you're mature enough to know who you are and to have your boundaries and your standards, and not be afraid, too polite -- but you're young enough to be a young woman," she said. "I'm so looking forward to it."
The singer added, "I always said I'd have a baby at 30. But I also said I'm going to retire at 30. ... Only God knows."
In that same interview, Beyoncé talked about her husband.
"Jay and I have kind of made a decision that we want to be known for our music and not our relationships or scandals. But he is amazing," she said. "I definitely had a very natural friendship and connection with him. We've been together for a very long time and I'm very happy. Love is the foundation of everything, everything I do. My music is inspired by love -- from my family, my husband, my sister."
No word on when the baby is due.
Post Your Well Wishes For Jay and Bey on Facebook.

Britney Spears Hosts As Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, More Bring Wango Tango To L.A.
Britney Spears hosts KIIS FM's Wango Tango 2011 on Saturday
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears makes headlines at concerts, even when she's not performing. That's probably why Los Angeles radio station KIIS FM tapped the pop princess to guest-host their annual Wango Tango music festival along with Ryan Seacrest on Saturday night at the Staples Center.
The bill was a balance of pop and hip-hop, with acts like Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Selena Gomez, "Glee" 's Matthew Morrison, Lupe Fiasco, T-Pain, Jason Derülo, Far East Movement, New Boyz, Cobra Starship and newcomer Cody Simpson.
Backstage, the media room went into a frenzy when Spears arrived in a red, geometric-print dress and a beaming smile. Owning her "femme fatale" moniker, Spears worked the carpet for a few moments while all of the cameras in the room were pointing at her. It was the second red carpet appearance by Brit this week, after her Beverly Hills benefit on Wednesday night for the St. Bernard Project.
Check out photos from Wango Tango 2011.
Spears' Femme Fatale collaborator Ke$ha, who was returning to the festival for the second time, said that an onstage collab between to the two would have to require one thing.
"That would have to include me finding her and attacking her," Ke$ha told MTV News, with the best intentions. "I'm planning on pouncing her."
While that never happened, at least not onstage, Ke$ha delivered on her promise of a set heavy on her glitter gun. And she assured us she knew the dos and don'ts of handling that kind of firepower.
"Do not spray yourself in the face with it," she said. "Do spray everybody else with it. That's pretty much it."
While Joe Jonas wasn't performing at the show, he took a break from recording his solo debut to catch up with almost everyone backstage.
"I didn't see Britney backstage, just said 'hello' to a couple of my friends," Jonas said. "Backstage is always [full of] people, especially having it at the Staples Center this time, I think compared to all the way out in the desert, it changes everything."
Also happy to have Wango Tango in Los Angeles were locals Far East Movement.
"Man, we grew up literally a few blocks away from here, and you can only imagine basketball games being played here," Kev Nish said. "So to come in here as performers, to be able to do our songs in this arena is a little crazy. We used to pass out CDs a few blocks [away], so we're very thankful. And the lineup is nuts, so we're extremely excited to be a part of this lineup."

Nicki Minaj 'Raises The Bar' On Britney Spears Tour
Nicki Minaj
Photo: MTV News
Nicki Minaj is known for her brightly colored persona, music and wardrobe, so it's no surprise that the New York rapper has managed to win over pop audiences night after night on the Femme Fatale Tour, during which she fiercely graces the stage before Britney Spears.
Minaj's high-octane energy and ability to put a pop spin on her hip-hop tracks shines through in her warm-up show. Her theater-kid side also comes out in the multi-media set, complete with dance routines, videos and Minaj's many alter egos.
The ability for a pop audience to identify with Minaj's sometimes NSFW themes is even a shock to the head Barbie herself. "Yeah, I'm always surprised," she told MTV News. "I don't really expect them to know all the records, but I guess it just kind of transcends all genres of music at this point."
Minaj set out to give her fans, both old and new, a spectacle. "I wanted my set to be more than an opening act, 'cause, you know, I did that already," she said, referring to her opening gig alongside mentor Lil Wayne on the I Am Still Music Tour. "I always like to raise the bar for myself, and that's what I did. I think it's important to give people what they paid for."
In addition to a set full of fan favorites that are earning her more and more Barbies each and every night, Minaj also has multiple costume changes that are sexy, cool and tough all at the same time.
"I didn't want to do a lot of color. I sort of wanted to tone it down and sort of bring the color back from my own tour, so I wanted it to be very sophisticated and sort of, you know, futuristic and all over the place," she said. "But sort of cagey and sort of epic."

'Hunger Games' First Look To Debut At VMAs!
Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss in "The Hunger Games"
Photo: Murray Close/ Lionsgate Entertainment
Katniss Everdeen is stepping out of the Hunger Games arena and into the Moonman-filled madness of the MTV Video Music Awards. At the VMAs on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, MTV will debut the very first look at footage from "The Hunger Games," the Jennifer Lawrence-starring adaptation of the best-selling dystopian novel.
Up until now, we've seen photos of Lawrence as the arrow-wielding Katniss, plus glimpses of Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale. But we haven't yet seen "Hunger Games" in action. All that will change during the 28th annual VMAs, when Lawrence herself introduces the exclusive look, which will then be available exclusively on MTV.com.
If you don't already know all there is to know about "Hunger Games," now's your chance to study up. Set in a future in which the United States has crumbled and 12 districts are overseen by a brutal Capitol, Katniss and Peeta find themselves forced to participate in an annual ritual called the Hunger Games. Pitting 24 young boys and girls against one another in a bloody battle to the death, the games are broadcast throughout the land at once to entertain and subjugate the citizenry. And at the center of it all is Katniss, a brave soul with expert hunting skills and the determination not to let the games destroy her soul or take her life.
"I was a fan of the books before I really knew about the movies," Lawrence told MTV News back in May, adding that she'd be working her butt off to get into character. "It's lots of training, but the training's actually really fun. I've done archery for about six weeks and rock climbing, tree climbing — and combat, running and vaulting. But also yoga and things like that, to stay catlike!"
The first glimpse at the film, which hits theaters March 12, 2012, is just one juicy part of the pop-culture parade that is the VMAs. Get ready for performances from Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Adele, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown, plus appearances by Jonah Hill, Rick Ross, Seth Rogen, Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian and Odd Future.
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Katy Perry, Adele, More: VMA Ladies' Night?
Best Female Video nominees Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Adele

Video of the Year might be the top prize at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, but this year, there is some serious competition in another category: Best Female Video.
With pop heavyweights Adele, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj all looking to take home the Moonman, it's a battle between five women who have all had stellar years. Leading up to their showdown, MTV News takes a look back at the divas' massive past 12 months:
Katy Perry
Nominated Video: "Firework"
Her Massive Year: Katy Perry dropped the feel-good clip in October, saying she "believed in people" when she wrote the track. Months later, in January, she announced the dates on her sugar-coated California Dreams Tour. In late June, Perry threw herself a party in her other VMA-nominated video, for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," which director Marc Klasfeld said "is definitely '16 Candles'- and John Hughes-influenced."
In July, it was announced that Katy was the lead nominee for the VMAs, racking up nine nods. To top it all off, weeks before the VMAs, it was announced that Perry had tied with Michael Jackson's record of five #1 singles from the same album.
Check out our "VMA Time Machine" an interactive timeline celebrating the ladies' epic year!
Beyoncé
Nominated Video: "Run the World (Girls)"
Her Massive Year: In November, just two months after last year's VMAs, Beyoncé started teasing fans about her fourth album. What was her plan? To "make my own genre of music," she declared. B later added that her musical influences on the then-untitled project included Michael Jackson and Lauryn Hill.
Fans finally heard and saw what she was talking about when she dropped the VMA-nominated video for "Run the World (Girls)" in May. Her album 4 eventually leaked three weeks early but still managed to debut at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. The year of 4 culminates when Beyoncé hits the VMA stage Sunday.
Lady Gaga
Nominated Video: "Born This Way"
Her Massive Year: Fans were teased with a taste of "Born This Way" at the 2010 VMAs when the meat-dress-wearing Lady Gaga belted out part of the chorus as she accepted her award for Video of the Year. By the time the full song dropped in mid-February, it broke a record as the fastest-selling single in iTunes history. Weeks later, the video, directed by Nick Knight, had everyone talking, thanks to its spacey theme.
Then Gaga finally released the album of the same name and it sold 1.1 million in its debut week on the charts, doing what no one has done since 2005. To celebrate her successes, Gaga is set to open the VMAs this year. Anything is possible with Gaga kicking off the show.
Nicki Minaj
Nominated Video: "Super Bass"
Her Massive Year: Since hitting up the VMA Pre-Show last September, putting on what she described as an "amazing look" along with will.i.am, Nicki Minaj dropped her debut album, Pink Friday. The album debuted at #2 on the charts, only topped by Kanye West's Runaway, leaving Minaj feeling "so grateful and kind of still in shock."
In March, Minaj proclaimed she was "letting it all hang out" in her "Super Bass" video. Whatever she did, it worked, earning her first VMA nomination. Then she not only had a "crazy" set on the I Am Still Music Tour along with Lil Wayne, she also told us that touring with Britney Spears "raises the bar" for her own stage show.
Adele
Nominated Video: "Rolling in the Deep"
Her Massive Year: Adele's 21 was a smash from the start, hitting #1 on the charts in its first week. Then, week after week, the album kept reaching #1. Adele's only hiccup in her banner year was having to shuffle around tour dates after she got sick in June.
Adele bounced back in a big way by earning seven noms for her video, feeling "flabbergasted" by the honor. Just weeks ago, her album topped the charts again, as the singer geared up for the VMAs and her performance on the show.
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Michael Jackson Family Announces Tribute Concert
Siblings LaToya, Tito, Jackie and Marlon Jackson after announcing 'Michael Forever,' in Beverly Hills July 25, 2011.

Michael Jackson's family has announced a tribute concert to the late King of Pop that is slated to take place on October 8 in Cardiff, Wales. The four-hour show at the 75,000-capacity Millennium Stadium will be broadcast via satellite on pay-per-view and into movie theaters with a cast of big-name performers whose identities have not yet been revealed.
At the Beverly Hills press conference on Monday revealing the details of the "Michael Forever" show, Jackson family matriarch Katherine was joined by sons Tito, Jackie and Marlon and daughter LaToya; siblings Jermaine, Randy, Janet and estranged husband Joe were not in attendance.
"When I was told some of the names of the artists performing, I knew it would be fit for a king. If my son was here today he would feel the same way, and so I'd like to say thank you very much for helping to keep my son's legacy alive," Katherine Jackson said of Michael, who died in June 2009 of a heart attack caused by a prescription drug overdose.
According to Wales Online, the show will feature artists Jackson admired and will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the start of his solo career.
"I will be there along with as many members of my family that can make it," Katherine said. "It is intended to be the biggest and best concert in the world for many years to come." LaToya added, "This event is far, far overdue. He was an entertainer who I feel no one can ever stand up to or hold a candle to as far as his talent is concerned. This tribute will be something spectacular and I know that he would approve."
One of the show's producers said that despite taking place in a large stadium, the event will have a more intimate atmosphere with the building's roof closed. Proceeds from the show will benefit three charities Jackson supported: the Prince's Trust, AIDS Project Los Angeles and a cancer charity. The show's lineup will be announced on August 3.
As with many things related to MJ's legacy, there was controversy, as brothers Randy and Jermaine said they thought the timing of the show was inappropriate. In a statement, the two said, "While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death. As everyone knows, those proceedings commence September 20."
That date is when Jackson's former doctor, Conrad Murray, is slated to go on trial for manslaughter charges in the singer's death.
Jermaine attempted to put on a tribute concert to his late brother in September 2009, but the show fell apart after many of the top acts were unable to commit to the event.

Kim Kardashian's Unwanted Honeymoon Guests? Goats!
Kardashian -- never long off Twitter, even on her honeymoon -- tweeted a picture on Friday of the goat roadblock, saying, "Not too often traffic looks like this! Gotta love Italy!"
Photos of the couple in Italy have showed them looking blissfully happy, making out, having breakfast in their robes, and relaxing in a hot tub show. With stops in Amalfi and Positano, as well as boating through the waters off the island of Capri, the sojourn is just a prelude to the real honeymoon. "We want to take our big honeymoon later," the new bride -- who will return to the U.S. to be a presenter at this Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards -- recently told People, hinting that wherever they go, it will be "definitely tropical."
Rumors of another wedding ceremony to be held in New York City have turned out to be just that. "There are rumors of a 2nd wedding in NY," Kardashian tweeted on Monday. "This is NOT true!! Our friends Jason Binn & Colin Cowie are throwing us a welcome to NY party!"
However, despite being blissed out, Kardashian hasn't forgotten about her fans in the wake of the growing Hurricane Irene threat. "I hope everyone on the East Coast is safe! I heard the weather is crazy!" she tweeted.
E! will air Kim's Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event as a two-part special on Oct. 9 and 10.

Britney Spears' VMA Promo: Go Behind The Scenes!
Britney Spears in her 2011 VMA promo
Photo: Roderick Trestrail II/ MTV
On Thursday (August 11), Britney Spears took over MTV when her Video Music Awards promo made its debut and MTV News was there when she filmed it.
The 30-second promo interlaces Spears' latest hit "I Wanna Go" with her own "Slave 4 U," Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" and Madonna's "Everybody" as dancers dressed in Brit's most-famous outfits crowd around her. There's also a nod to Michael Jackson, with a poster on the wall that says "Billy Jean," in reference to MJ's hit "Billie Jean," and a dancer who mimics the late King of Pop's iconic moves. At the end of the promo, Spears stands in front of a wall that cryptically reads "A Tribute to Britney Spears" before the date of the VMAs — 8.28 — flashes on the screen.
Spears, whose "Till the World Ends" is nominated for Best Pop Video and Best Choreography, filmed the promo last month in Miami, and MTV News was on the set for a behind-the-scenes look.
"The general concept of what we are going for is basically called 'The Muse Factory,' " director Jahai Brightly explained. "It's where all your favorite artists that are going to be at the Video Music Awards this year meet and explore their influences and inspirations."
The promo pulls from Spears' own musical influences from over the years, which is portrayed through the set design, wardrobe and, of course, through Brit herself.
In the promo, Spears pays homage to Madonna, Michael and Janet, whom she calls "the people I've grown up listening to and totally inspire [me]."
The promo doesn't just show the pop star's own musical icons; it also reminds us of what a musical force Spears is as well. "We are going to be exploring her past styles," Brightly said of Spears' classic looks. "In particular, past six styles that represent each of her albums, with the seventh one being the current incarnation."
Spears, whose outfit was designed to represent her current style, is dressed in a custom-made studded leather jacket, a shredded black T-shirt and her signature cutoff jean shorts. The promo begins with Spears paying homage to her latest album, Femme Fatale.
"I did the opening segment, where I'm at the mirror and I'm representing how many albums I've done, which is number seven," Spears said.
Spears then begins her journey down memory lane, where she is surrounded by dancers dressed up in some of her signature video looks, such as the flight-attendant costume in "Toxic" and her infamous red catsuit in "Oops! ... I Did It Again."
"I'm walking down a hallway and I'm seeing memorabilia of all my performances that I've done in the past," Spears said. "All my dancers are dressed up in my old outfits, which it's really cool."

'Dark Knight Rises' On Set: Best Pittsburgh Sneak Peeks!
On the set of "Dark Knight Rises" in Pittsburgh
In late May, to mark the start of "Dark Knight Rises" production in Pittsburgh, we got our first look at the newest villain to face off against Batman: Tom Hardy as the broad-backed, rubber-face-mask-rocking Bane. That juicy, studio-approved first look, it turned out, was a harbinger of spoiler-y sneak peeks to come.
Over the next three months, we feasted our eyes upon villains and vehicles and massive action set pieces and more. The free-for-all, though, is probably at an end, as "Dark Knight Rises" production in Pittsburgh has wrapped ahead of a shift to Los Angeles, where on-set security is likely to be significantly tighter. So as we bid goodbye to Batman's adventures in the Steel City, let's take a look at the five coolest things we've peeped since May.
Check out photos from the set of "Dark Knight Rises."
Kickoff at Heinz Field
Early in August, director Christopher Nolan took over the Pittsburgh Steelers' home stadium of Heinz Field for an epic action sequence in which NFL stars like Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu got into character as the Gotham Rogues in front of 10,000 extras. For once, these gridiron greats weren't the center of the action, as the game was interrupted by the explosive arrival of Bane and a few camouflaged tumblers.
Crashing Catwoman
We need not rehash the not-exactly-warm reception to the photographic debut of Anne Hathaway in character as Catwoman. A far more perilous situation unfolded days later when Hathaway's stunt double crashed the Batpod into a cameraman working with a super-expensive IMAX camera. Reportedly, neither the camera nor the operator was injured. So that's good, as was the peek at the scene they were shooting: police officers beating the heck out of people outside Gotham City Hall.
Totaled Tumbler
Everywhere you looked in Pittsburgh, there were tumblers — those armed vehicles Christian Bale made into his newfangled Batmobile. Where'd they all come from? And what the heck happened to one of them, which wound up buried in rubble? Our guess is Batman's latest badass vehicle is responsible for the damage.
Batwing Takes Flight
The latest vehicle, of course, is the Batwing. In mid-August, we got our first look at the craft, which has popped up in previous "Batman" films but never before in Nolan's versions. Gone was any resemblance to director Tim Burton's earlier iteration, or the Batplanes present throughout comic-book history; in their place was an ultra-realistic aircraft that seemingly owes its existence, like the tumbler, to a military design.
Bane Takes on Batman
Of all the many character-centric set pics, our favorite is probably this one of Bane grappling with Batman. For all the high-tech gadgets this movie will feature, the fight between these two adversaries might well come down to some old-fashioned fisticuffs. The photo also showcased a fat scar on Bane's neck, perhaps Nolan's way of explaining the villain's life-or-death addiction to an experimental drug called Venom.
Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

Natalie Portman First Post-Baby Film Role: Playing Angela Lansbury's Mom?
According to TheWrap, the 30-year-old Black Swan actress has been offered the starring role in Adaline, an indie film about a woman who stops aging after a strange accident. According to an earlier press release, the character "was killed in a car accident, until a simultaneous lightning strike resuscitated her and physiologically locked her in her late 20s. Adaline lives a solitary existence until she meets a man worth losing her immortality for." Katherine Heigl was originally attached to star, but dropped out in November.
While the film sounds cool, the news is surprising -- if only because Portman seemed so excited about taking a long maternity leave.
"I imagine I'm going to want to be home for years, just me and my baby," she told Newsweek in January. She did, however, note that her friends told her otherwise: "Everybody says after two months you go out of your mind."
Maybe Portman is being tempted by Adaline because of the rare opportunity to work with another great actress: Angela Lansbury. The 85-year-old actress -- who has five Tonys, 15 Emmy nominations and three Oscar nominations -- has taken only two film roles in the past decade. If Portman signs on to play the immortal lead character, she won't only get to star with Lansbury -- she'll get to play her mother! That's an offer she won't get again, and perhaps reason enough for husband Benjamin Millepied to stay home with the baby for awhile.

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her 'Crazy' Led Zeppelin Covers
Mary J. Blige
Photo: MTV News
You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.
In early February, reports began circulating that Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven," working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her Stronger With Each Tear album, due Monday.
But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering another Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the Essence Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.
"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."
Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.
"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.

Michael Jackson's Family Upset With James Durbin Over 'American Idol' Pepsi Quip
James Durbin performs on "American Idol" on Wednesday
Photo: Michael Becker/ Fox
Some people might argue that it's patently unfair to take rank amateurs, put them on the biggest show on TV and then expose them to potential worldwide ridicule every week. Because it's one thing to tune in to "American Idol" from your living room or play shows at the local wings joint, it's another thing entirely when you get up on that stage and open your mouth with tens of millions watching and listening.
James Durbin learned this lesson the hard way this week when he made what he thought was an innocent crack about not setting himself on fire during his pyro-tastic cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" on Wednesday night.
Asked by host Ryan Seacrest if he was worried about dancing around among the flames shooting up from the piano onstage, Durbin joked, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around — so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.' "
The seemingly innocent crack was a reference to the 1984 on-set accident in which late pop icon Michael Jackson was badly burned during the shooting of a Pepsi commercial by some wayward pyro effects. The serious burns he suffered in the incident allegedly led to his longtime addiction to pain medication and prescription drugs.
The Jackson family was not amused by the quip and sent a statement to TMZ on Thursday.
"We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death," read the statement. Family patriarch Joseph Jackson also was reportedly miffed that "Idol" producers did not cut the comment from the West Coast feed of the show.
Durbin defended his slip-up in a tweet, which has since been scrubbed from the singer's official "Idol" Twitter feed, that explained, "For anyone talkin ... I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it." He later added, "Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people."
It's worth noting that Pepsi's bitter rival, Coca-Cola, is the main "Idol" sponsor, a fact that Seacrest reminded Durbin of in an awkward moment after the comment on the show.
What did you think of James Durbin's "Pepsi" quip? Tell us in the comments.

Coldplay, Led Zeppelin Album Covers Featured On New British Stamps
Coldplay's new British stamps
Photo: Royal Mail
On Thursday (January 7), the U.K.'s Royal Mail unveiled a series of 10 new stamps, honoring the most iconic album covers of the past 40 years.
The albums featured in the new series are the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, Led Zeppelin's IV, David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, The Clash's London Calling, New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies, Primal Scream's Screamadelica, Pink Floyd's The Division Bell, Blur's Parklife and — the most recent album on to make the cut — Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head.
Meant to honor "the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people's lives," the series is the end result of a lengthy research process by the Royal Mail, who looked through thousands of album covers by British artists before deciding on the final list. And, during a Wednesday night BBC Radio broadcast, it was revealed that the queen herself actually approved each design.
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page — who helped design the cover for IV — was on hand to celebrate the release of the stamps and recalled the mysterious nature of the album's iconic imagery.
"Almost 40 years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him," he said. "That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time."
Of course, any great honor is befitting of an equally great contest, so, on the same day the stamps were made available to the general public, Coldplay decided to give one of their Rush of Blood stamps away. In a message on their official site, the band held a contest to send one lucky fan "a letter using a Coldplay stamp, postmarked with today's issue date."
"We visited our local post office earlier today and bought some of the Coldplay stamps," the message read. "Very nice they are too."
